Western Digital's new My Passport SSD range is available today from $100.
Western Digital is describing its first solid-state My Passport as its fastest portable drive.
Image: Western DigitalStorage maker Western Digital has finally released an SSD version of its popular My Passport portable drive.
The firm's new range of My Passport SSDs offers consumers an alternative to the SSDs from Samsung, Seagate, and LaCie.
Supporting data-transfer speeds of up to 515MB/s, the drive gives users of the SSD a significant advantage over existing My Passport hard-disk drives. However, speed comes at a price.
The My Passport SSD will be available with 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB capacities but will cost $100, $200, and 400, respectively, which is a lot more than its existing My Passport disk drives. These are available with 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, and 4TB space, and cost $60, $80, $109, and $119, respectively.
However, the SSD variant is also more portable, with a height of 10mm (0.39 inches), length of 90mm (3.5 inches), and width of 45mm (1.8 inches).
The portable SSD sports a USB Type-C port and comes with a USB Type-C to type-C cable with an adapter for Type-A ports.
On the data-protection front, it uses 256-bit AES encryption and offers password protection. Data stored on the portable SSD should survive a 2m (6.5-foot) fall, and like existing drives it comes with a three-year warranty.
The new lineup of consumer external SSD drives follows Western Digital's recent acquisition of SanDisk, which already sells its line of Extreme 900 portable SSDs with up to a 1.92TB capacity, and are aimed at professionals in creative industries.
The new SSD drives are available for purchase today from Best Buy.
